Wooden flooring · The Decora field notes

Will wooden flooring survive an Indian monsoon?

Yes, wooden flooring can work through an Indian monsoon in a suitable dry room, but a damp subfloor, leaks or the wrong product can make it fail. Product choice and fitting decide the result.

First, check this

Identify the exact flooring type and check the room for leaks, wet cleaning, balcony doors and persistent dampness.

The detail that changes the answer

A dry bedroom

Several flooring constructions may be possible. Check the subfloor and product instructions, then compare feel and maintenance.

Near a balcony or entrance

Rainwater and wet shoes change the risk. Ask how the edges and joints will be protected and maintained.

A room with dampness

Do not cover the problem. Find and resolve the moisture source before selecting or installing flooring.

What not to do

Do not treat laminate, engineered wood and SPC as the same material, or assume a waterproof surface makes the whole installation waterproof.

What we would do next

Ask the installer to assess the subfloor and the manufacturer's moisture limits before choosing a floor. Compare real samples and installation details, not just appearance.

The question is not wood or no wood

Homeowners often hear that wooden flooring cannot work in India. That is too broad. A dry bedroom, a leaky balcony threshold and a damp ground-floor room are different situations. Laminate, engineered wood and SPC also have different constructions and installation requirements.

The first useful question is where water could enter. Look at doors, plumbing, cleaning habits and the condition of the subfloor. A handsome sample cannot tell you whether the base below it is ready.

What to ask before buying

Ask for the exact product name, the manufacturer's installation guide, moisture requirements, edge details and care instructions. Clarify whether the quoted price includes subfloor preparation, underlay, trims and fitting.

If a floor is already lifting, do not force it flat. Photograph the pattern of movement and have the installer check moisture and movement allowance before making a repair plan.

A sensible next step

Bring room measurements and photographs of the floor and entrances. We can help compare the available finishes, but a fitting decision should follow a site assessment if there is any sign of dampness.
